Wines to Start 2021

The new year offers hope and an eventual return to a normal life. Wine will continue to supply us with many good things in the coming year. It will take us to all parts of the world and give us much enjoyment with our meals, family and friends. Here are a few wines to try at the beginning of 2021.

White Wine

2018 Markham Sauvignon Blanc
This wine comes from the Napa Valley, a blend of two Sauvignon Blanc vineyards and 3% Semillon. It is a delicious and well-crafted wine. The Markham S.B. is more in the style of a French Sancerre or White Bordeaux wine. I like this wine as a cocktail wine or with light meals. The tropical notes in this wine are lovely. Wine Enthusiast gives this wine 90 Points, and I think that is deserving. At Total Wine, the cost is just under $10 a bottle. Compare that to the winery price of $20. If you like your Sauvignon Blanc in the French style, this one is for you.

Red Wine

2018 Juan Gil – Silver Label
Let’s start the year with a medium-bodied, spicy, red wine with racy flavors of berries. The Juan Gil Silver is from the Jumilla wine region. Jumilla is near the Spanish city of Murcia. I would love to travel to Murcia in the Fall of 2021. We have been to many cities in Spain, but not Murcia. This wine is so good! Our Vintage Wine Tasting Club recommended this wine back in early December 2020. I purchased several bottles at Total Wine for just under $12 each. KL Wines and BevMo also carry this wine for a few bucks more. The Wine Advocate, 92 Points; James Suckling, 90 Points; GoodCheapVino, 89 Points. Juan Gili is a fantastic Best Buy Wine.

Sparkling Wine

Gruet Brut or Gruet Brut Rosé
Sparkling wine should not be just for celebrating the New Year or other special events. As Gerald Weisl, the proprietor of Weimax, states: “Sparkling wine should be consumed on any day the of the week that ends in “y.” We like the Gruet bubby over most of the mainstream California sparklers. This wine is made in New Mexico by a French family. That’s the main reason the Gruet tastes more like a Champagne wine. WebiMax has it for $14, and at a better price with a case discount. It is also at Total Wines and some supermarkets. Buy enough to have on the stock to celebrate every joy in 2021. The day you get your vaccine shot. The day you lose your mask. The day you entertain all your friends at home!

Splurge Wine

2018 Cedarville Vineyard Grenache
Cedarville is a small family winery in the wine region of Fair Play in the Sierra Foothills. We have been visiting and buying wines at Cedarville Vineyard since the year 2003. Weimax carries a few of their wines, but the sure way to acquire Cedarville wines is through their online Website. We like all their wines, but the 2018 Grenache is a standout. The price is $26 a bottle, with case discounts available. A great suggestion is to get a few of your wine friends together and order a mixed case of Cedarville. You must include the Grenache. It has some delicious spice and red plum characteristics. It is truly a Rhone-style Grenache wine. Organic. Only 99 cases were made, so get to it quickly.
