2013 Wild Thing Old Vine Zinfandel from Mendocino – Carol Shelton wines

Wild Thing Old Vine Zinfandel from Carol Shelton – $14.99 Costco, $17.99 Safeway

Every now and then, a wine you are familiar with gives you a big surprise. I’ve reviewed the Wild Thing Old Vine Zinfandel before, and I have always enjoyed it very much. I just tried the 2013 Wild Thing Old Vine Zinfandel, and what a great surprise. I truly love this wine! Carol Shelton has outdone herself with this wine. It is a delightful Zinfandel, and I think it’s a case-worthy purchase.  The Wild Thing has a screw top, so plan to drink it over the next  one to two years. It is so fun to drink and very easy to polish off in one sitting. I like everything about this Zin. Not just the flavors but because it’s made by Carol Shelton, one of the great ladies of wine, also known at the “Queen of Zin.” The Wild Thing is made from sustainably-farmed grapes and fermented with uninoculated wild yeast. It is not just all old vine Zinfandel, but 14% old vine Carignane, 5% Petite Sirah, 1% Alicante Bouschet. This amazing blend of grapes gives a juicy boost to the 80% Zinfandel.

I have purchased previous vintages at the Safeway, but this is the first time I have seen this wine at Costco (Foster City and Redwood City). This vintage of the Wild Thing has light, jammy characteristics, but more on the full-bodied side of Zinfandel. It is a wine that keeps on giving when it comes to complexity. The finish is long and worthy. It truly is hard to put this wine down. Give the wine some breathing time, or decant it to get the full appreciation of what this wine has to offer. You can match this Zinfandel with a variety of foods from pasta to red meat on the barbecue. Wine Enthusiast 89 Points, we say 90 Points.

If you interested in visiting the Carol Shelton Wines, it is located in a warehouse area in Santa Rosa, CA, at 3354-B Coffey Lane.  The tasting room hours are from 11am to 4pm daily.  Carol makes her wines at this location, bringing in  fruit from many vineyards in California including the Cucamonga Valley.  Cucamonga grapes are used for Carol’s  popular Monga Zin. Another popular Carol Shelton Zinfandel is her Rockpile Zinfandel.  Rockpile AVA is mystical and magical rugged area above Lake Sonoma in the Dry Creek Valley.
