What is Picpoul

Picpoul is a grape. This particular grape is from the Languedoc Roussilon region in the South of France. The sub-region is Picpoul de Pinet. Picpoul de Pinet is a very small area of 3000 acres. The Picpoul grape is the white wine grape of the Languedoc. Everything you need to know about Picpoul de Pinet is at the Official Appellation Website of Picpoul de Pinet.

2018 Montmassot Picpoul de Pinet

The 2018 Montmassot Picpoul de Pinet is at K&L Wines for $10.99. According to the K&L Wines’ Website, the Picpoul grapes come from a local cooperative in the village of Florensac. Someone there in the village had purchased the grapes from the vineyard owners and created the Montmassot label. All the grapes are sustainably farmed.

Some folks say the Picpoul grape flavor is a much like a Muscadet grape from the Loire Valley. It is really quite unique, and that makes it a fun wine to drink. It is zesty’ no doubt. The aroma is like a fresh and delicate blossom from the garden. It is very easy to drink and perfect to enjoy outdoors.

As far as food, the locals in Picpoul de Pinet drink the wine with local seafood (the Mediterranean), mussels and oysters. It is the acidity that makes the Picpoul a perfect match with seafood. Other light foods and cheese will also work.

You will not be able to find a Picpoul De Pinet wine in a supermarket. I have never seen one at Costco. Most wine shops carry a small number. K&L Wines have this wine and a domestic Picpoul for $24.

Weimax Wines usually carries the Domitia Picpoul de Pinet for $14. Total Wines carries the Hughes Beauvignac Picpoul de Pinet for $12. Now the rest is up to you. Get out there and try a Picpoul de Pinet.
