Wente Vineyards Chardonnay

Wente Vineyards Chardonnay – Morning Fog and Riva Ranch

I received three different samples of Wente Vineyards Chardonnay. This was in honor of world-wide Chardonnay Day on Thursday, May 21. I was not able to participate in the social media sphere of Chardonnay Day  because I was participating in  the Tenth Annual Bocce Tournament at the Francis Ford Coppola Winery. I tried these two Chardonnay wines in a side-by-side tasting over the weekend. I’d reviewed these wines in the past but hadn’t compared them together. These are both very nice wines at reasonable prices, and they are widely available in fine wine shops and supermarkets.

Wente Vineyards Morning Fog Chardonnay – Safeway $11.89 or $10.70 a six pack

You should be able to find the Morning Fog at various supermarkets for close to this price. It’s a very good price for a decent Chardonnay. The grapes are estate grown on the Wente Vineyards site in Livermore. There is just a touch of oak in the wine, from barrel fermenting 50% of the wine. The other half was fermented and aged in stainless steel. This gives the wine more natural fruit flavors and a nice refreshing taste. 87 Points.

Wente Vineyards Riva Ranch Chardonnay 2013 – Bevmo – $15

I previously reviewed Wente Riva Ranch.  This Chardonnay is from the Arroyo Seco wine region of Monterey. In comparison to the Morning Fog, the Riva Ranch has more oak in the nose and on the palate. It also has a greater finish. Two things I like about this wine are the rounded mouthfeel it displays and the fact that the oak character in the wine does not overpower the other aspects of the wine. There is still some freshness to this wine. I rate this wine at 88 Points; Janelle likes it more at 89 Points.

More on Safeway Wines

Following up on my Safeway wine sale purchases from last week, I opened two bottles and both were disappointing.  The Il Gioiello Zinfandel Amador County 2012 for $8.99 was flat and hot on the finish. The Daou Chardonnay was $13.50 at the six-pack price and not nearly as good at the two Wente Chardonnay wines. Skip both of these wines.

  1. I just came back from the Foster City Costco. They have the 2013 Riva Ranch Chardonnay for $13.99 minus a $2.50 rebate at checkout. Total cost per bottle is $11.49. Wow! Expires on 5/31/2015
