Paso Robles red wines we like

The Vintage Wine Tasters recently blind tasted several red wines from Paso Robles. We have four wines to recommend, all under the $20 price range.

Paso Robles has 11 AVAs or wine appellations. Bordeaux and Rhone style wines rank among the best of California. Zinfandel has long been a favorite of Paso wine enthusiasts. We also can find some beautiful Pinot wines from Paso. Paso Robles is a wine lover’s paradise. Visit and experience this amazing and exciting wine region. We try to visit once a year.

2019 Daou Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon

2019 Daou is a delicious Cabernet

In our blind tasting, the 2019 Daou entry-level Cabernet Sauvignon was the overall favorite of the group. It sells for $19.99 at Costco, $19.97 at Total Wine, and $24.95 at KL Wines. At the Daou Vineyard online wine shop, it’s $30. The Daou Paso Robles Cabernet is a beautifully-balanced Cabernet Sauvignon. We like the complexity of this wine, with loads of flavors to contemplate. Pair with a beautiful Rib Eye steak and you will be delighted.

2018 J. Lohr Paso Robles Cabernet Seven Oaks Vineyard

Seven Oaks Vineyard Cabernet from J. Lohr

If you don’t want to spend so much as the Daou on a delicious Cabernet, try the 2018 J. Lohr Paso Robles Cabernet Seven Oaks Vineyard. You will find it in many stores for anywhere from $13 to $17. Safeway, Costco, Total Wine, KL Wines and Trader Joe’s. Yes, you can call it a “Supermarket Wine,” but the wine gives you a big “bang for the buck.” Although not as tasty as the Daou, it is a very likeable Cabernet. We call it medium-bodied and smooth, with black fruit flavors and a touch of vanilla.

2019 Opolo Summit Zinfandel

Summit Creek Zinfandel by Opolo

The Opolo Summit Creek Zinfandel is a juicy and medium-to-full bodied Zinfandel. It has some good tannins to match with a red meat off the grill, or a hearty meat pasta dish. The price at Costco is $12.99. KL Wines also carries the wine, but it is $17.95. If you like Zins with some robust flavors, this one is for you.

2017 Ancient Peaks Renegade

Beauty of a red blend from Ancient Peaks

The Ancient Peaks Renegade is a popular blend of red varietals from the Margarita Vineyard in Paso Robles. Each vintage brings a different blend. The 2017 Renegade has Syrah 37%, Malbec 24%, Petit Verdot 13%, Zinfandel 16% and Petite Sirah 10%. The Renegade is a full-bodied wine delivering many flavors, but dark fruit is predominant. 92 Points from the Wine Enthusiast and 89 from the Wine Spectator. Pair this wine with pizza, steak, and pasta. Costco sells this wine for $15.99.
