Sobon Syrah 2013 Amador County – A Draeger’s Market Deal

Sobon Syrah 2013 Amador County

From the Sobon Estate Winery in Amador County comes this bargain, highly recommended by Vintage Wine Taster Bruce. Bruce reports: I discovered this gem at Draeger’s Grocery in San Mateo. They do occasionally have some very good values and this is one of them. The folks in the wine department at Dreager’s are well schooled, like a good wine shop proprietor. This Sobon Syrah 2013 is rich in flavors and very smooth. It has some very nice spice to it. The wine passed the acid test when I served it at a family gathering. My son-in-law, who has an expensive wine palate, loved the wine. I rate it at 89 Points. It is $12.99 at Draeger’s Market.

The Sobon Syrah is 98% Syrah and 2% Zinfandel, all naturally farmed and sustainably grown on the Sobon estate vineyards. 803 cases were made. On the Sobon online wine shop, the Syrah sells for $18. Sobon tells us to match this with wild game, flame-grilled steaks and chops. “Excellent to drink now but will benefit from short-to-medium cellaring.”

About Sobon Estate Winery in the Shenandoah Valley – Amador County

Sobon Estate Winery is a family-owned winery located in the Sierra Foothills near Plymouth in Amador County. The AVA (wine appellation) area is the California Shenandoah Valley. This is not to be confused with the Shenandoah Valley AVA in Virginia. Leon and Shirley Sobon came to the Shenandoah Valley in 1977 and founded the Shenandoah Valley Winery.  In 1989 they purchased the old D’Agostini winery and established Sobon. The Sobon Family still owns and operates both wineries. One of the most impressive features of Sobon is the quality of the wines produced at very affordable prices. One of the long-time favorites of bargain wine hunters and Zinfandel lovers is the Sobon Estate Rocky Top Zinfandel. It sells for around $14. K&L Wines always has the Rocky Top on the shelf. The Rocky Top Zinfandel has topped two of the Vintage Wine Tasters past Zinfandel blind tastings.
