Soave – Garganega grape and the Castle

The Photo of Soave and its Castle (Castello di Soave) was a highlight of our trip to Italy in 2011. There are vineyards everywhere possible in Soave, but mainly on any hillside. Soave Castle dates to 1379. The principal grape is Garganega. It makes for a deliciously crisp, floral white wine. The volcanic soils imbue the wines with a distinct minerality, enhancing their complexity and depth.

In my college years, Soave was a sweet wine commonly found in 1.5-liter bottles. It was cheap and widely available in supermarkets and drugstores like Walgreens. The Soave wines of today are excellent. If you have not tried a Soave wine, put it on your list of wines to taste. We will be reviewing some Soave wines very soon.
