2019 Seghesio Sonoma Zinfandel

The Sonoma Seghesio Zinfandel is one of the tastiest Zins on the market. Many places sell the Seghesio Sonoma Zin for more than $20. The winery price is $26; at Calmart in Calistoga the price is $28.99. We can find it below $20 at several stores. Year after year, the vintages of Seghesio Sonoma Zin deliver top value. We call it a medium-bodied Zinfandel, with just about the correct amount of boldness and enjoyable fruit.
The Seghesio label goes back to 1995, when Edoardo Seghesio purchased land and planted vines in Sonoma County. In 2011, the fourth generation of the Seghesio family stunned the wine world. The family announced that It had sold the winery to the Crimson Wine Group. What a shocker! Selling a family winery to a big wine company hardly ever ends well, in my mind. But in this case, and eleven years later, the quality is still there in the Seghesio label. The winery is famous for its lineup of Zinfandel wines, but the best value is in its Sonoma Zinfandel.
The current winemaker at Seghesio is Andy Robinson. For this 2019 Zinfandel, grapes come from vineyards in Russian River Valley, Alexander Valley, and Dry Creek. Some 12% of the blend is a mix of Petite Sirah, Alicanted Bouschet, and other grapes.
The overall 2019 vintage of Zinfandel is one of the best in recent times. Tim Fish wrote in the most recent issue of the Wine Spectator: “2019 Zinfandel wines are fruit forward but not fruit bombs. They’re ripe but not decadent or burdened with the heat of alcohol.”
The Seghesio Sonoma 2019 vintage has many accolades, including 92 points from Wine Spectator and 90 points from Jeb Dunnuck. We rate it a solid 90 points.

Other great Zinfandel wines
If you cannot find the Seghesio Sonoma Zinfandel, there are plenty of great Zinfandel wines to try from the 2018 or 2019 Vintage. One of our favorite Zinfandel wines is Carol Shelton Wild Thing from Mendocino County. It sells for $16.19 (Sixpack) at the Safeway and $16.00 (Sixpack) at Total Wine. Another medium-bodied and delicious Zin is the Sobon Rocky Top from Amador County. The cost is $14.95 at KL Wines.
Wine corks – A gardening hack
This garden hack for using wine corks came from Vintage Wine Taster Ray. When planting your herb and vegetable garden, put your wine corks to good use. Wine corks are useful as a plant identifier. Wow, what a cool idea! Get out a sharpie and a wooden skewers and label your plants.

The Seghesio Sonoma Zin pairs well with the recipes I often prepare so, I drink a lot of it. I recently found the 2019 vintage at my local Safeway. It is a significantly better wine all around than the 2018 vintage. Hopefully Costco will be carrying the 2019 soon; I likely will be buying it by the case. That said, I wish Seghesio would produce a Barbera of comparable quality at the same price point.
