Good Sparkling Wine at Best Buy Prices

Sparkling wine is one of the world’s favorite drinks. Summer is especially a great time of the year to enjoy the refreshing taste of a well-made bubbly. Do you know that Champagne is sparkling wine? There is an international law prohibiting the use of the term Champagne from any sparkling wine made outside the area of Champagne.  Why then is there Korbel Champagne from Sonoma County?

We are looking at various wine shops at markets for good sparkling wine at Best Buy prices. Here is what we like and where you can purchase these wines. We will start with the most expensive and work down to the least costly. All of these sparkling wines are under the $20 range.

Kirkland Signature Brut Champagne – Costco Stores $19.99

Kirkland Signature Brut Champagne is produced by Janisson & Sons in the town of Verzenay. It is the only Champagne in our line up. It is the real deal. It tastes like a good Champagne, better than many in the $40 ranges.  See my complete review: Kirkland Champagne, who makes it and how good is it?

Domaine Allimant Laugner Rosé – Whole Foods $19.99,  Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant $19.50

Domaine Allimant Lauger

Delicious Cremant from Alsace at Whole Foods & Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant

The Allimant-Laugner Rosé is our favorite sparkling wine. We drink and serve it for special occasions. It is made in the Alsace, “Cremant d’Alsace” It is 100% Pinot Noir and is so delicious that it is too easy to drink. The Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant in San Francisco says it is their top selling wine.  Our review of the Domaine Allimant Laugner Rosé

Domain Chandon Brut or Rosé –  Safeway $15 to $16,  Costco $13.99

The Domain Chandon winery is in the heart of the Napa Valley in Yountville. It is an excellent venue for a visit, tour, and tasting.  Domain Chandon makes a ton of this sparkling wine. The Safeway had the best price on this wine for a long span, but now Costco is carrying the Domaine Chandon Rosé for $14. Mumm Napa is also at the Safeway for around the same price as the Chandon. That’s an excellent sparkling wine too!

Gloria Ferrer Brut – Costco $12.79

Of the three California sparkling wines, Chandon, Mumm Napa, and Gloria Ferrer, my choice is the Gloria Ferrer. Gloria Ferrer is in Carneros on the Sonoma County side. It is a lovely winery to visit and to sip sparkling wine looking out at the vineyards of Carneros. Gloria Ferrer is a Spanish Family winery. The parent winery is the famous Freixenet Cava House in the Penedes region of Spain.  Wine Enthusiast rates the Ferrer Brut 90 Points

Gruet Brut & Rosé – Cost Plus World Market – $12.24

Gruet Sparkling Wine

Gruet Sparkling Wine

The Gruet Brut is a scary good deal at World Market. You must buy six wines, mix-or-match, to get the price. I have never seen the Gruet at a better price. The Gruet Brut is our favorite go-to sparkling wine. It is made in New Mexico by a French Family who once made wine in Champagne. They chose their location in New Mexico based on the similar soil and climate as Champagne. I also like the Gruet Rosé.  The Safeway also sells the Gruet lineup of sparkling wines for $13.49 for the six-pack price. Wine Spectator has the Gruet Brut on the Top 100 Wine Value list and a “Smart Buy.”

Dubon Brut and Rosé – Weimax Wines $10.99 and $11.99

Proprietor Gerald Weisal always has some unique wines to enjoy, and this is one of them. The Dubon is a Spanish Cava. Both the Brut and Rosé are dry and delicious.

Segura Viudas Brut – Cost Plus World Market $7.49

$7.49 is the six-pack price, mix-or-match. You are not going to find a better drinking sparkling wine at this price. Guess who makes this Cava? The same family who owns Freixenet and Gloria Ferrer.

Why you need a sparkling wine stopper

If you have sparkling wine as an aperitif, you will likely not finish the wine in one sitting. You will need a stopper closure so you won’t lose the fizz. A sparkling wine stopper will keep the bubbles for an additional one or two days. Here is one at Amazon:

  1. I moved up to the Sacramento area a few years ago but always remembered that wonderful Cremant I had purchased at the Ferry Plaza. So happy to see Whole Foods has that too. Will run and buy some today. Thank you for jogging my memory.
