Sauvignon Blanc Wines at Trader Joe’s

I found two excellent bargain Sauvignon Blanc wines at Trader Joe’s. If you shop at Trader Joe’s both are worth trying. These two  wines are Elizabeth Spencer Mendocino Sauvignon Blanc 2016 and the Bonterra Sauvignon Blanc 2016.  These two wines reflect different styles of the Sauvignon Blanc grape.  You have a dry and tropical wine compared to a very crisp wine with notes of citrus, mainly grapefruit and gooseberry. Which is your cup of tea when it comes to Sauvignon Blanc?

Elizabeth Spencer Mendocino Sauvignon Blanc 2016 – $14.99

Elizabeth Spencer winery is in the Napa Valley just across from the Oakville Grocery on Oakville Road. Elizabeth Spencer makes fantastic wines that are pricey, but noted for their high quality. The Mendocino Sauvignon Blanc sells for $22 at the winery. The price at Trader Joe’s is $14.99, an excellent value.  I love the total flavors of this wine.  My wine glass begs for more; it tastes so delicious!  The Sauvignon Blanc grapes come from two vineyards near Ukiah and both are organically farmed. The Elizabeth Spencer has a great nose of tropical notes and, on the palate, lots of flavors including peach and apricot. Even though the wine is fermented and aged in stainless steel, the mouthfeel is soft and full. In  the spec sheet, the winemaker notes that the mouthfeel has much to do with Sur Lie aging. That means letting the grape juice rest on dead yeast cells for a period. Here is an explanation of Sur Lie aging.   I am happy to see that Trader Joe’s carries this delicious Sauvignon Blanc. Since I have not seen it at other Trader Joe’s, I am assuming this is a new wine for T.J’s.  Keep it going Trader Joe’s; this is a fantastic choice. I rank it at 90 Points. If you are a lover of the New Zealand style of Sauvignon Blanc, you will probably like the Bonterra more so.

Bonterra Sauvignon Blanc 2016 Trader Joe’s $9.99, Safeway – $8.99 six pack price

I have raved about the excellent value of Bonterra wines. All the Bonterra wines are well made, tasty, and organic. Bonterra Sauvignon Blanc 2016 is from three vineyards and is 100% Sauvignon Blanc. Most of the grapes are from Mendocino and Lake County, and just a tad are from Sonoma County. Not quite New Zealand style but close enough. The Bonterra Sauvignon Blanc is very crisp and refreshing with some citrus character.  Wine Enthusiast ranks the Bonterra S.B. at 90 Points and a Best Buy. I like it at 88 Points and one of the better value wines around.
