Rhone-style white wines are not that well known. You probably have tried a Viognier, the most popular among the Rhone white wines. Lesser-known Rhone whites are Marsanne, Rousanne, Picpoul, and Grenache Blanc. Rhone whites are delicious wines, and most come from France’s Rhone and Languedoc wine regions. Except for Viognier, few California wineries produce the Rhone whites. However, down in Santa Barbara wine country is the Koehler Winery making Rhone white wine, including this tasty Grenache Blanc.

Tasting Notes Koehler Grenache Blanc 2017

The Koehler Grenache Blanc is from two estate vineyards in the Santa Ynez Valley, the Casa Blanca Vineyard and the El Camino Real Vineyard. All the grapes were fermented and aged in stainless steel. It is 100% Grenache Blanc.

To Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc wine drinkers, the Koehler Grenache Blanc will be very different. Be prepared for a change-of-pace dry white wine. Savor the wine and test it out with various appetizers like popcorn, crackers, and cheese. Your palate will soon get accustomed to the delightful aromas and flavors of delicate flowers.

I get a wet stony character with an expansive feel on the palate. The flavors blossom forward. It is dry with a refreshing tang. My favorite thing about the wine is its long and lingering finish. I can taste this wine long after swallowing, for almost a minute. I love sipping this wine as an aperitif.

Koehler Winery

The Koehler Winery is in Santa Barbara wine country in the Santa Ynez Valley. The Foxen Canyon Wine Trail includes Koehler along with some other interesting wineries, including Fess Parker Winery and Vineyard. Remember the TV character Davy Crockett? Another excellent winery on this wine trail is the Andrew Murray Winery. We love the Syrah at Andrew Murray.

Koehler is a lovely family winery sitting on 60 acres of vineyards. All the wines are estate wines, meaning the wines are made 100% from the Koehler vineyards. The vineyards include Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Grenache, Riesling, Sangiovese, Sauvignon Blanc, Grenache Blanc, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Viognier.  Some of the vines are 47 years old. The area of Santa Ynez lends itself to growing many varieties of wine.
