I don’t often shop at BevMo these days. I have not found much in the way of wine bargains that interests me. This past Saturday morning, walking by the Burlingame Avenue BevMo store, I decided to take a look inside. Lucky me! I stumbled on a display of Rosenblum Rockpile Vineyard Zinfandel 2013. The price was $29.95, but buy a second bottle and that one is 5 Cents. That translates to $15 for a Rockpile Zinfandel, an unheard of price for a wine from the mystical Rockpile AVA.

The Rockpile AVA is an area of vineyards high above Lake Sonoma, about a 25-minute ride from Healdsburg in Sonoma County. The elevation is from 800 to 2000 feet. During the vineyard-growing season, days can be hot and very windy. The grapes are stressed to the max. The result is wines that are full bodied with intense flavors.

Tasting Notes: Rosenblum Rockpile Vineyard Zinfandel 2013

The Rosenblum Rockpile Vineyard Zinfandel 2013 is a big Zinfandel wine. As in most Rockpile wines, the alcohol is high, 15.3% for the Rosenblum. The flavors are complex and layered. It is robust but not over jammy. I like it, but perhaps a little less than most Rockpile Zins I have tasted in the past. This is a six-year-old bottle of Zinfandel wine, so it has smoothed somewhat.

I checked the Rosenblum Website, and the Rockpile Vineyard Zinfandel 2013 is $42 at their online wine shop. That is a hefty price differential. I rate this Zinfandel at 89 Points. Zinfandel lovers should find this wine delightful.

On the BevMo Website, you can plug in your Zip Code and find a store nearest you. See if they have the Rockpile Zinfandel in stock; otherwise check the next closest store. As of this article, there were a good number of bottles available in the Bay Area.

I have visited the Rockpile AVA several times and once had the opportunity to tour the area with Mauriton Family Wines owner and winemaker Clay Mauritson. Here are some cool shots that depict the ruggedness of the Rockpile AVA.

  1. Great deal and great photos. Well worth the price @$15 per bottle. It’s complex and balanced with more years left of good drinking. Nice find 👀
