2013 Renwood Premier Old Vine Zinfandel – Nob Hill $13.99

The Renwood winery in Amador County has been one of the best known and long-standing wineries in the County. A few years ago an Argentine company purchased Renwood. The new owners made several upgrades, including naming Joe Shebl as the head winemaker. I met Joe at the recent Wine Bloggers pre-conference in Amador. He is young and energetic. I asked him about this 2013 Premier Old Vine Zinfandel and how it came to taste so good at such a value price. Joe related that the winery’s quest is to produce small lots of Zinfandel wines, many from old vine Zinfandel vineyards that have been dry farmed. The case amount of these wines is kept low and most allocated to wine club members or sold only at the winery. When the case allocation is reached for each of these special wines, the leftover wine juice is blended to make the Premier Old Vine Zinfandel. The grapes in this wine come from vines that are 50 years old.  “The consumer is getting top value and quality in the wine,” says Joe.  Nob Hill in Redwood Shores is selling this wine at a six-pack price, mix-or-match for $13.99. I have also seen the wine at the Safeway for about $18. The recommended price is $20. If you like Zinfandel, you need to try this one.

  1. The six pack price at my Fair Oaks, CA Safeway is $14.39 for this Renwood wine. I bought a couple bottles today. Renwood is another very nice winery to visit in the Shenandoah Valley and October/November are good months to visit the valley. It is quieter, the pace is slower and the wineries are genuinely happy to see you.
