Pizza with Wine or Beer – Which is Better?

Pizza with wine or beer?

Pizza is one of the most popular dishes on the American dining scene. Should it be wine or beer to have with a pizza? I prefer wine with pizza; a good red will always bring out the best in a pizza.

When to have beer or wine with pizza

  • Pizza lovers under 30 years of age will likely have beer with pizza
  • Pizza lovers over 30 will likely have wine with pizza, unless they are having pizza for lunch
  • Pizza is filling, and that is why wine with pizza is better
  • Beer quenches thirst, wine enhances the flavor of pizza.
  • After playing a team sport, beer is mandatory with pizza
  • Pizza joints have better beer choices than wine choices, and usually serve only house wine. That is why it is better to order beer at a pizza parlor
  • Homemade pizza is so delicious, a good glass of wine is mandatory

What wines with Pizza

With so many pizza styles and toppings, there is no one wine that will work with all pizzas. Most pizzas have a cheese base. The toppings can be sausage, ham, tomatoes, pesto, mushrooms, or pepperoni. For  these toppings,  I recommend a Zinfandel wine. Look for a moderately-bodied Zinfandel, as in the Dry Creek Vineyards Heritage Vines Zinfandel 2016.

Many stores carry the Dry Creek Vineyards Heritage Vines Zinfandel 2016 for around $15 to $19. It is a delicious Zinfandel with restrained fruit and jammy characteristic. It will make almost any pizza taste better. Dry Creek Vineyards Heritage Vines Zinfandel has typical Zinfandel fruit character, accentuated by flavors of plum.

The Dry Creek Zinfandel is 79% Zin,  20% Petite Sirah, and 1% Primitivo. Aging time for the Heritage wine was 14 months.

Costco carries this wine for $14.99. KL Wines offers this Zin for $17.99. Cost Plus World Market sells this for $16.99 on a sale price. On the online Dry Creek Vineyards Website, the winery is selling this wine for $24.

Both the Wine Enthusiast and the Wine Spectator tap the Dry Creek Vineyards Heritage Vines Zinfandel 2016 at 90 Points. I rate it at 89 Points. A delicious Zinfandel, especially with pizza.
