Novelllum Chardonnay 2016 – Great French Chardonnay for $11

Novellum Chardonnay 2016

Novellum Chardonnay 2016 from the Languedoc region of France

Novellum Chardonnay 2016 – K&L Wines $10.99

The great Chardonnay wines of France come from the historic Burgundy region. Good quality Burgundy Chardonnays command very high prices. So, where can the wine bargain hunter find an excellent-tasting French Chardonnay? Look no further than the Novellum Chardonnay 2016, a beautiful wine, but Surprise, Surprise! It is not from Burgundy but from the South of France. The importer is Eric Solomon and his European Cellars. The Novellum Chardonnay is from the Languedoc region of France, more specifically Roussillon. The Chardonnay vineyard is owned by Jean-Marc and Eliane Lafage and located very near the shores of the Mediterranean. This is a delicious and thoroughly pleasing Chardonnay wine. It is the opposite style of most California wines, ones aged in oak barrels and have undergone full malolactic fermentation. The Novellum is fermented in stainless steel and aged in a somewhat novel procedure. 70% is aged in stainless steel tank and the rest in French oak barrels for three months. The juice in the stainless is aged on the lees of Viognier grapes. Very interesting!

On the nose, we get fresh aromas of peach and other tropical notes.  The wine is nicely balanced with modest acidity, a great mouthfeel, and an adequate finish. It almost has a velvety feel on the palate.  The Novellum has enough character to make you ponder each sip. This wine makes for a terrific aperitif or will go great with salads, light foods, cheese, and soft fish dishes. The Novellum is an excellent bargain wine that I rate at 89 points. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate rates the Novellum at 92 Points and states: “A sensational wine that will compete with wines five times the price, the 2016 Novellum Chardonnay is the real deal.”
