Norton Reserva Malbec 2017

The Norton Reserva Malbec 2017 is now available at several supermarket shelves, some wine shops, and at Costco. The usual price of the Norton Malbec varies from $13 to $16. The $9.49 price at Costco is about as low as it can be. That’s $2.50 off the regular price of the Norton at Costco. It’s one of those Costco discounts given at the register. The Norton Malbec is also at Cost Plus World Market and some Safeway Stores.

The Norton Reserva Malbec, vintage after vintage, is always a terrific Best Buy Wine. The 2017 Vintage is no exception. Wine critic James Suckling rates the wine 92 Points. Wow!

I purchased one bottle and immediately went back for more. That to me is the best rating a wine can have. The price, plus the quality, means stock up before Costco pushes the price back up to $11.99. Even at that price, the wine is an excellent wine bargain.

I’m rating the Norton at 89 Points. I love the feel and taste of this wine on the palate and in the aftertaste. It is moderate and balanced, not too light or too heavy. It has a good combination of red and dark fruit.

Kirkland Malbec 2018

To add interest to my Norton Malbec tasting, I purchased a bottle of the Kirkland Malbec 2018. This Malbec is by the Broquel winery in Mendoza, Argentina. I reviewed this wine previously and enjoyed it very much. How would it compare to the Norton Malbec?

I did a side-by-side tasting, and I found it very difficult to distinguish between the two wines. In my book, they are almost identical. I think the Kirkland Malbec has just a tad of spice. The interesting fact here is that James Suckling rated both of these wines, 92 Points for the Norton, and 91 Points for the Kirkland Malbec. It is a toss-up. The Kirkland sells for $6.99.

If you are a wine geek, try the two side-by-side and tell us what you think.

Comments

  1. I did try the Norton and Kirkland Malbecs side by side. I agree that there is not a big difference between the two wines. The Kirkland has been a favorite for sometime now. I cannot think of a single wine that is a better value that the Kirkland Malbec at $6.99. I will be buying more of the Norton but only while it is on sale.
