Segura Viudas Gran Cuvée Reserva

I received a sample of this new sparkling wine produced by Segura Viudas. We have long been fans of the Segura Viudas Brut and the Rosé that are sold widely. They are decent and enjoyable sparkling wines for under $10.  So let’s see how this Gran Cuvée Reserva stacks up. The price point will be around $12 to $15 when it hits the wine shelves in the U.S. As you can see from the photo, the label is very classy and the glass bottle is impressive. The press release states: ” The wine will only be made in exceptional years when the climate, soil, and harvest conditions are optimal.” It is a blend of 85% Macabeo and Parellada grapes that are the standard for the Cava sparkling wines of Spain. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir fill out the rest of the blend.  Both Janelle and I were taken by this sparkling wine. It is dry with some fresh apple flavors, crisp as can be and very delicate on the palate. We often enjoy sparkling wine, and our “go to” sparklers are Domaine Chandon Brut and Gruet Brut. We think this one is just a tad above these two. I’m hoping Segura Viudas Gran Cuvée Reserva will be at one of my local stores very soon. Spain’s Ferrer Family owns Segura Viudas and Freixenet in Spain, and Gloria Ferrer in the California Carneros wine region.

Wines Of Substance Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 – KL Wines $14.99

Review and recommended by Vintage Wine Taster Mike: This is another great effort from Washington winemaker Charles Smith. At $15 this is a great buy with solid Cabernet fruit. It is a great Washington State Cab with some earthy character, complex aromas of berry and dark chocolate. I love the long finish on this wine. I like drinking a wine like this with multiple flavors that show in the palate. It also has some acidity to give the wine the total package. This wine can age for a few years, but why wait? KL Wines has a good supply at their stores. 90 Points is my rating. It’s a great buy.
