2018 Mas Donis Old Vines Montsant

KL Wines is one of the few wine merchants in the greater San Francisco Bay Area that carries this fabulous wine. The winery, or Bodega, as they say in Spain, is the Cellar de Capcanes. It is one of the best wineries in the Montsant region. In addition to a regular line of wines, the winery makes kosher wines for the Jewish population in Barcelona. The kosher wine production has separate wine making quarters.

The Mas Donis is a blend of Garnacha and Syrah grapes from 35 to 50 year-old vines. The wines are fermented and aged in concrete tanks for six months. The Montsant region is beautiful, with climate and soils that produce lovely and complex wines. See the Tech Notes on the 2018 Mas Donis Old Vines Montsant.

Tasting Notes

The aroma pops with violet and other dried herbal notes. The complex flavors make a fun wine to ponder with each sip. If you are a fan of blueberries, you get that character in the Mas Donis. We also like the beautiful finish of the wine.

The Mas Donis is a terrific food-friendly wine. It is medium bodied, but a little more. It goes well chicken dishes, Paella, and pork chops. I opened this wine and had it over two nights. The first night, we had a veggie pasta dish with a combination of Basil and Parsley. We loved the match; the herbal (Wine and Herbs) notes in the wine were perfect. On the second night, I made a black bean burrito filled with rice, guacamole, and cilantro. You may not think the pairing works, but it was terrific.

My rating is 90 Points, and Jeb Dunnuck gives the Mas Donis 91 points. What a terrific value at $12.99 at KL Wines.
