Martin Ray Sauvignon Blanc

Last week, we recommended two wines at Costco for under $7. This week, I discovered two other terrific values for $10 and $11. These two wines are a step above last week’s picks. This post, we review the 2017 Martin Ray Russian River Valley Sauvignon Blanc.

The photo above perfectly depicts the fresh and outdoorsy taste of the 2017 Martin Ray Sauvignon Blanc. I purchased this wine at the Foster City Costco for $10.99. Elsewhere the average price is $18. The Martin Ray Sauvignon Blanc comes from the famed cool-climate Russian River Valley in Sonoma County near Sebastopol.

I love the beautiful balance of this wine, with moderate acidity and fresh notes of pear, peach, and lime flavors. The wine also has a touch of minerality. For $11, it is hard to find a similar Sauvignon Blanc at this price. It is a lovely-tasting wine. Drink it as an aperitif or with a seafood meal. The Martin Ray Sauvignon Blanc is a perfect picnic lunch wine.

I like this S.B. better than Hanna or Ferrari-Carano that we have recommended previously. The style is more on the White Bordeaux or Sancerre style of wine. It is completely opposite that of a New Zealand style of Sauvignon Blanc. 89 Points. The Wine Spectator also gives this Martin Ray wine 89 Points.

Lunardi’s stores carry Martin Ray wines and they have this same vintage for $16.99. Perhaps Costco purchased the remaining 2017 inventory from Martin Ray. June 2019 is the likely release of the 2018 Sauvignon Blanc.

Martin Ray tasting room and winery in the Russian River Valley

About the Martin Ray Winery

The Martin Ray Winery and tasting room is a hidden gem in the backroads of the Russian River Valley. It is one of our favorite wineries to visit. The tasting room is low-key and friendly. Since it is off the beaten path, there are few visitors. Pack a picnic lunch and snag one of the lovely tables by the vineyard. It is quiet and serene, and a wonderful place to picnic in wine country.

Martin Ray Winery is located at 2199 Laguna Road in Santa Rosa. Take Highway 12 off 101 Highway and meander through amazing vineyard scenery. It takes about an hour to get to the winery from the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge.

There are several other good wineries to visit in the Russian River Valley. Check out the wineries on this Wine Trail. You may want to make a full day or weekend getaway to this region of Sonoma wine country.

Stay tuned for our next review. It is a delicous Cabernet Sauvignon for $9.99.
