Learn about Viognier

Viognier is a grape originally grown in the Northern Rhone Valley. It has perhaps become more popular in California. Viognier is a full-bodied wine with wonderful aromatic characteristics. Viognier has become a popular substitute for Chardonnay. Viognier can be made in stainless tanks, giving it more of its natural fruit flavors, or it can be aged and fermented in oak barrels. If it undergoes malolactic fermentation, the wine becomes more full-bodied.  Viognier is grown widely in the Sierra Foothills and in the Paso Robles wine region.

Under $20 Viognier wines we like

  • In Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines of 2018, we have a fantastic Best Buy Wine in the Yalumba Viognier 2017.
  • Bonterra and Cline make very good Viognier wines
  • Our favorite Viognier is Cedarville Viognier. It is from the Fair Play AVA in El Dorado County. It may run a little over $20 but it is well worth it. Sold only at the winery in Fair Play, CA
  • Pine Ridge Winery in the Napa Valley produces a white wine that is a blend of Viognier and Chenin Blanc. It is always a very nice bargain wine. Review of Pine Ridge Chenin Blanc/Viognier
