Excellent Zinfandel from Dry Creek

Those of you who follow GoodCheapVino know that one of our favorite Zinfandel wines is the Pedroncelli Mother Clone Zinfandel. Pedroncelli makes excellent wines at old-fashioned prices. And, by the way, Pedroncelli is a fun winery to visit. Once the Pandemic lifts, we are headed to the Dry Creek area and Pedroncelli winery. Pedroncelli is just a few minutes from the wine country town of Healdsburg.

Pedroncelli Mother Clone Zinfandel paired with Pork Chop and Blister Red Grapes – A New York Times recipe

2018 Pedroncelli Mother Clone Dry Creek Zinfandel.

This is the current release of the Mother Clone Zin. The Pedroncelli Zin is just about the most perfectly balanced Zin you are going to get for under $20. Cheap Zins are overripe with lots of vanilla and oakiness. Some can be so heavy that you cannot taste your food after a half a glass of wine.

Why the term “Mother Clone”

The term comes from the fact that the vineyard is the second generation. Budwood from the old vines (the Mother) in grafted on a vine to continue a new generation of similar vines. If you visit Pedroncelli, you can view the old vines on the property. The Pedroncelli Winery began in 1927.

Tasting Notes and Food Pairings

What I like about the Pedroncelli Mother Clone Zinfandel 2018 is the overall balance and flavors. By balance, I mean everything meshes nicely in the wine, with no flaws. The flavor has lots of plum and blueberry, along with a good finish. It is a tasty and delicious Zinfandel. I’m rating this Zinfandel wine at 89 Points,

I like pairing the versatile Mother Clone Zinfandel with many different types of foods. Try a pesto pizza, fig pizza or mushroom pizza. Pasta sauces with herbs, olives, and mushrooms. Anything from the barbecue grill goes well. We like it with Pork Chops (see photo). A juicy hamburger always matches with a beautiful Zin.

You can purchase the 2018 Pedroncelli Mother Clone at BevMo, Total Wine, and Weimax Wines in Burlingame. The prices vary between $12 and $14. Check the shop’s Website for availability, the exact price and inventory.
