Montes Alpha Chardonnay
Montes Alpha Chardonnay – from the Coast of Chile

2017 Montes Alpha Chardonnay

We love the Montes label, and their reds are some of our favorite Best-Buy Wines. Back in 2009, we took a trip to Argentina and Chile and had a most thrilling visit to the Montes winery in the Colchagua Valley of Chile. This is our first try of the 2017 Montes Alpha Chardonnay. Wonderful!

Entrance to Montes Winery in the Colchagua Valley of Chile

The 2017 Montes Alpha Chardonnay is a lovely and brilliant-tasting Chardonnay. It is unlike a typical California-style Chardonnay with oak and creamy buttery flavors. It is more moderate in style, with light, buttery and beautiful notes of freshness. It has multiple flavors to enjoy with each sip.

The grapes for the Montes Chardonnay are from Chile’s coastal wine region. The cool climate is ideal for Chardonnay. About a third of the grape juice was aged in French oak for 12 months; the rest of the juice was aged in stainless steel. Thus, a gentle and rewarding Chardonnay. 90 Points.

The price range is from $18 to $20. Some Total Wine stores carry the 2017 Montes Alpha Chardonnay.

2017 St Francis Sonoma Merlot

St Francis Sonoma 100% Merlot
St Francis Sonoma 100% Merlot

The St. Francis Vineyard and Winery is in the northern portion of the Sonoma Valley. It is one of our favorite wineries to visit. The back drop of the Mayacamas Mountains is stunning.

This Merlot is quite complex, with a spicy white pepper taste and dark fruit flavor, especially black cherry. The finish is long, with the spicy flavor lingering. I characterize this Merlot as a comfortable-drinking wine. I like the balance and the feel as I sip the wine. I rate it at 89 Points.

The 2017 St. Francis Merlot is 100% Merlot from various vineyards in Sonoma, including the Rockpile AVA and the Russia River Valley. The aging was done in French oak barrels for 16 months. You can find the St. Francis Merlot at Total Wines for $17 and BevMo for $18. Check your Safeway or Albertson’s store for it. Let us know where you find it.

I received the the Montes Chardonnay and the St. Francis Merlot as sample wines. I post review notes on sample wines that I enjoy.
