Carol Shelton’s Wild Three

Look for the Carol Shelton Wild Thing wines at Safeway stores. I purchased mine at the Burlingame Safeway store on Howard Avenue. The Wild Thing wines have a bit of untamed character. There is something thrilling about these three wines.

Who is Carol Shelton?

Carol Shelton is one of California’s great winemakers. She’s a graduate of the UC Davis wine program. That was in 1974, when only a few women dared to become winemakers. Perhaps she had that wild thing that enabled her to rise to the top of a male-dominated field.  Some call her the Queen of Zinfandel because of her lineup of vineyard-specific Zinfandel wines. Other varieties of wine are also in the Carol Shelton lineup.

2017 Wild Thing Chardonnay

The current price of the Wild Thing Chardonnay at the Safeway is $14.71 at the six-pack price. Elsewhere, the Wild Thing Chardonnay sells for $18. It is $19 at the Carol Shelton online wine shop. Warning: This Chardonnay is not for everyone. If you like big oaky and buttery Chardonnay, this one won’t do it for you. The Wild Thing has some tropical notes, excellent acidity, and a refreshing character. A small amount of Marsanne (5%) and Viognier (2%) give it some extra pizazz. It is a Wild Thing! We like it at 89 points.

2016 Wild Thing Old Vine Zinfandel

The Wild Thing Zinfandel wines are among our favorite Zins. Vintage after vintage, this wine cannot miss. The vineyards are in Mendocino and are 60 years old. Perhaps it is the small amount of old-vine Carignan that gives this Zin its wildness. We like it because the wine has some wonderful fruitiness and balance. It is not one of those outrageous, high-alcohol Zins that haunts you after one glass. The Wild Thing Zin is food-friendly, with lovely red fruit flavors and some spunky spice character.

The six-pack price at the Safeway is $14.21. Elsewhere the price is $19. The Wine Enthusiast rates the 2016 Wild Thing Old Vine Zinfandel 92 Points and an Editor’s Choice. We like it at 90 Points.

2018 Wild Thing Rendezvous Rosé

Not too long ago, wine shoppers could find few Rosé wines on the shelves. Today, there are many Rosés available. Wineries are jumping on the Rosé bandwagon. Rosé is trendy and wineries want in on the profit. Some are good, but many are not. Be safe and choose the Carol Shelton 2018 Wild Thing Rendezvous Rosé. It has everything a good Rosé wine should have. It is dry, refreshing, fruity, and so easy to love. The Rendezvous Rosé is 62% Carignane, 36% Zinfandel, 2% Petite Sirah. The Carignane grape is the key to this wine’s zesty flavor. 89 Points. The six-pack price at the Safeway is $11.51, elsewhere $17.

More Rosé wines than you can shake a stick at

You can also find the Carol Shelton wines at Mollie Stone’s and online at the Carol Shelton Website. Carol’s wine production is in a warehouse area on Coffey Lane in Santa Rosa. We pray that Carol, her employees and the winery are safe from the devastating Kincaid Fire.
