Carol Shelton’s Wild Thing Old Vine Zinfandel

Carol Shelton is one of the top winemakers in California. Her niche is Zinfandel and often she is referred to as the Queen of Zinfandel. Carol’s Zinfandels are sourced from vineyards that each reflect a unique style of Zinfandel. Rockpile, Cucamonga, Mendocino, and Dry Creek are where she finds Zinfandel grapes for her exceptional wines. In the Best Buy arena of Carol Shelton lineup is the 2015 Wild Thing Old Vine Zinfandel. It is one of our favorite Zins.

2015 Wild Thing Old Vine Zinfandel

The Wild Thing Zinfandel grapes come from Cox Vineyard near Ukiah. These are 60-year-old vines growing on bench lands and slopes in Mendocino County. The name Wild Thing comes from the gnarly-looking old vines and because the wine was inoculated with wild yeast cells. The Cox Vineyard is organically certified.

My local Safeway and Mollie Stone’s stores carry the 2015 Wild Thing Zinfandel. Safeway price is $13.99 if you buy six, Mollie Stone’s is $16.99 if you buy six. In both stores, you can mix-or-match six to get the sale prices. Please note, the prices are subject to change by the week.

2015 Wild Thing Old Vine Zinfandel Tasting Notes

What I enjoy most about this Old Vine Zinfandel is the freshness of the wine. The aroma and taste are filled with berry flavors. Close your eyes and you might think you are in the middle of raspberry and blackberry fields. There is also a nice spicy touch to the wine. The Wild Thing is just a dandy tasting Zinfandel.

If you like heavy duty Zins that are more on the raisiny side, the Wild Thing is not your Zinfandel. I am rating it at 89 points and a very food-friendly wine.

Visit Carol Shelton

The Carol Shelton winery and tasting room is in Santa Rosa. It is in a warehouse area, so you miss the ambience of wine country. An excellent option is to visit Carol by traveling west on Piner Road to Olivet Road. It is about a 15-minute ride. Olivet Road is beautiful wine country. Visit Harvest Moon Winery, Pelligrini, and Hook & Ladder. See this Olivet Road Wine Trail.

$13.99 when you mix or match six

Here is a tidbit about the Safeway 30% off sale. The tag in the photo indicates the regular Safeway price is $22.20. The price at Carol Shelton’s winery is $19; thus the suggested retail price. When is a 30% sale not a 30% sale?
