Best Buy Wine – Yalumba Viognier 2017 from South Australia

Yalumba Viognier 2017 – Cost Plus World Market $7.99

What a great end-of-the-year Best Buy Wine. The Wine Spectator hailed the Yalumba number 56 on its list of the Top 100 Wines of 2018.  The Yalumba Viognier 2017 is now available at Cost Plus World Market. I purchased a few bottles at the BridgePoint store in San Mateo. To get the sale price of $7.99, you need to buy four wines, mix-or-match.

Viognier is one of the great wine grapes of the Rhone Valley. Viognier is known for its aromatic character and fresh, clean taste. Viognier can be made in stainless steel, neutral oak,  or light oak.  The Yalumba Viognier is 100% Viognier and fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks.  See the complete tech sheet.

Tasting Notes Yalumba Viognier 2017

The Yalumba Viognier greets you with a blast of the outdoors. I feel I’m in a flower garden on a warm sunny day. The taste is clean and fresh with a good dose of minerality. This Viognier is a lovely wine to savor and enjoy. I can’t believe this wine is just eight bucks. Suggested retail is $13, and that in itself is a fantastic price.

According to the producer, the Yalumba Viognier “Drinks perfectly with harissa chicken or crispy rice pancakes with potato and chickpeas.” That must be the Aussie diet, but I am thinking some fresh grilled shrimp or calamari. Pan-fried Petrale sole sounds scrumptious with this light and zesty wine.

Viognier is an excellent alternative to Chardonnay wines. Give it a go and serve it to your family and guests. They will undoubtedly praise you for your selection of delicious wine.
