Wine With Substance – CS Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Wines of Substance 2015 CS Cabernet Sauvignon – Costco $12.99

From the famous Washington Vintner Charles Smith comes the highly-touted CS Cabernet Sauvignon 2015. The Cab is from three different vineyards in the Columbia Valley. One of these vineyards is in the Red Mountain AVA, a Cabernet region, one that Washingtonians declare as equal to or better than the Napa Valley. The CS Cabernet Sauvignon must be a huge-production wine. My Costco has a big display and a good supply on hand. I also see that Total Wines ($12.97) and Wine.com ($13.99) offer this wine.

For those of you who like a feisty wine with a big taste, this wine will meet your needs. I found the wine to be a bit tannic, but overall a good wine. It certainly drinks like a wine of substance. I recommend letting this wine breathe at least one hour or, better yet, decant the wine. It will open up and be more pleasing. According to the tech sheet, the Cabernet grapes come from these three vineyards:  Goose Ridge in the Red Mountain AVA, and French Hills and Coyote Canyon in the Wahluke Slope of the Columbia Valley. It is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in 50% new oak barrels for 12 months.

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate rates the Wines of Substance CS Cabernet Sauvignon at a whopping 92 Points. I call that grade inflation. Food & Wine Magazine’s December issue also gives praise to this wine. The magazine has a list of recommended Cabernet Sauvignon wines for the Holidays. The recommendations range from “Pours for Parties” to “Pricey Presents.” The CS Cab is one of the “Pours for Parties” recommendations.  My take on the wine is 88 Points. My taste for a party wine calls for something less bold. I think the Tarima Monastrell that I reviewed last week is a much better choice for a crowd and at a much better price, $6.47.
