Where to find an excellent Pinot Noir for $16

2014 Talbott Kali Hart Pinot Noir

I found this wine in two different stores for the same price of $15.99. I stopped in at the St. Helena Safeway in the Napa Valley and purchased a six-pack of wines including one Kali Hart Pinot Noir. With the six-pack discount, the price came to $15.99.  I shared the Kali Hart Pinot with family and friends at a home in St. Helena. We were extremely delighted to find the 2014 Talbott Kali Hart Pinot Noir to be an excellent Pinot Noir. It was so good that it stood out over another Pinot Noir we opened at the same dinner. This wine was from the Willamette Valley in Oregon and more expensive.  Several days later I found the same Kali Hart vintage at Costco in Foster City for the same price, except that the $15.99 price at Costco is for a single bottle.

The 2014 Talbott Kali Hart Pinot Noir is estate-grown fruit from the Monterey AVA in the Santa Lucia Highlands. This is a true-tasting Pinot Noir, light-to-medium body with rich red fruit delights.  The wine is fresh and appealing, and traditional Pinot Noir lovers will delight in the flavors of this wine. It is perfect to have with a grilled salmon or an herb-roasted chicken. 89 Points is my rating. The Wine Enthusiast gives it a 90-Point rating. The list price is $26 and the average price is $21.

In 2015 Talbott Vineyards sold the winery and vineyards to Gallo. Another small family winery finds its way to a behemoth wine company. The big factor in this winery sale is the 525-acre Sleepy Hollow Vineyard in Monterey. It is known for its top-quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir fruit.  Talbott Vineyards has been selling many of this fruit to some other wineries. Will that continue?

Talbott Vineyards is located on Carmel Valley Road in Monterey County. See the Carmel Valley Wine Trail.
