Alto Adige Pinot Grigio – Kupelwieser $14.66

I purchased this wine at Total Wines at the Bridgepoint Shopping Center in San Mateo. The price is $14.66 at the six-pack price, mix-or-match. This Pinot Grigio is produced by the Kupelwieser Winery and is exclusively for Total Wines. Alfio Moriconi is the European buyer for Total Wines and arranged for importing the Pinot Grigio. The Kupelwieser is what Total Wines call a “Winery Direct” wine. Thus, an exclusive wine made for Total Wines.

Janelle and I visited Alto Adige in October of 2011. It was a memorable trip and we found all of the Pinot Grigio wines made in the region to be delightful wines.  The Dolomite Mountains are spectacular. In the Alto Adige, both Italian and German are spoken. The wineries in Alto Adige produce the cool-climate varieties of wine including Pinot Bianco, Gewurztraminer, and Pinot Noir.

Many Pinot Grigio wines come from Trentino in Northern Italy. Trentino is in the southern portion of Alto Adige. The Pinot Grigio wines from Trentino are usually high-production wines and not nearly as tasty as the Pinot Grigio wines that come from Alto Adige DOC.

Tasting Notes – Kupelwieser Pinot Grigio 2016 – Alfio Moriconi Selection

The Kupelwieser Pinot Grigio is 100% Pinot Grigio. It is the perfect summer wine. The aromas are wonderful, somewhat floral and tropical. The wine has a tasty splash of pear and other light fruit. The mouthfeel is generous. The Kupelwieser Pinot Grigio is very easy drinking and makes an ideal aperitif, pairing nicely with appetizers, especially spicy ones. I mixed some homemade Zaatar into my hummus and it was a perfect match with the Pinot Grigio. See the YouTube video at the end of the article for the recipe I used for Za’atar.  If you don’t shop at Total Wines, shop for an Alto Adige Pinot Grigio at your favorite wine shop. You will love this wine on a beautiful summer afternoon. 89 Points for the Kupelwieser Pinot Grigio 2016. Alcohol is 13%.

Another Alto Adige Pinot Grigio we like is the St. Micheal Eppan

Some good news for those up in the Colma, Daly City area. A Total Wines is coming to the Gellert Marketplace in Daly City. It should open in late July.
