Bourbon Barrel Aged Wine – Will you like it?

I recently received a sample of  Cabernet Sauvignon, a Bourbon barrel aged wine. The name on the bottle is Rich & Spicy. According to the producer’s PR guy: “Although it’s only been on the market for about a month, the response from consumers has been tremendous.” Rich & Spicy is not the first Bourbon barrel aged wine. Several others have made it on the wine scene in the last couple of years. I previously reviewed on the Bourbon barrel aged 1000 Stories Zinfandel ($14) produced by Fetzer Vineyards.  The Robert Mondavi Winery produces a Private Selection Cabernet Sauvignon ($14) from Monterey aged in Bourbon barrels. I see it on many supermarket shelves. Do we see a trend developing and will there be much more Bourbon barrel aged wine on the supermarket shelves?  My take on Bourbon barrel wines is that they are so different in style that will likely attract their own group of wine aficionados. There are many young wine consumers who want something different, something less wine snobby, something the elite wine drinkers will skip. Bourbon barrel aged wine might just be the style these consumers are looking for.

I opened the Rich & Spicy and from the get-go, its unique aroma is obvious.  It pops spiciness from the glass. By itself as an aperitif, I completely enjoyed the wine. Indeed it is very different from any Cabernet Sauvignon I have experienced. Extending the Rich & Spicy wine into our dinner hour, the wine became something altogether different. The richness of the wine takes center stage and the food becomes secondary. The wine’s  spiciness, chocolate and vanilla characteristics overpower. I would rather have something more tame to go along with a good meal.

The spec sheet indicates a partial amount of the wine was aged for three months in Bourbon barrels, the remaining wine aged in French and American oak for 18 to 20 months. The Rich & Spicy wine is produced by the Rich Wine Co, one of Scotto Cellars (Lodi) wine labels.

The Rich & Spicy Cab is worth a try if you see it on the wine shelves. If nothing else,  it would be a good conversation piece among wine drinkers. It also might be a fun idea to taste this wine with the Mondavi Cab and the 1000 Stories Zinfandel and compare notes on the effect of aging wine in Bourbon barrels.
