The Vintage Wine Tasters met informally last week to give three recently-released Sauvignon Blanc wines a try. We first blind tasted the Beach House Sauvignon Blanc 2013 by Douglas Green. Yes, 2013 is correct. This wine is from South Africa and hence the harvest occurs in March in the Southern Hemisphere. We purchased two Sauvignon Blanc wines at the Burlingame Safeway, the Quivira Dry Creek Valley and the Whitehall Lane Napa Valley, both 2012 vintages. These two California wines are part of the current Safeway 30% off sale, plus 10% more when you mix-or-match six wines.
Sauvignon Blanc Wines
The Beach House Sauvignon Blanc 2013
The Beach House S.B. was a sample wine sent to Vintage Taster Mike. In the tasting most of us picked this wine as our favorite but it was very close to the Whitehall Lane. This wine is more similar in style to a French Sauvignon Blanc than it is to a New Zealand style of Sauvignon Blanc. Mike was sent a spec sheet along with the wine and it indicates that the wine is 85% Sauvignon Blanc, and 15% Semillon. The wine can be found at many Cost Plus World Market stores for around $10. I think the Semillon gives some substance to the wine and makes it more pleasing in the nose and palate. The acidity in this wine is very well balanced. 88 Points.
Quivira Dry Creek Sauvignon Blanc 2012
We purchased the Quivira for $11.70 in the mix-or-match sale. This wine did an about face for us. Tasting it blind and without food, most of us found the wine to be too acidic and somewhat overpowering with citrus flavors. Only Vintage Taster Mike selected the wine as his favorite. Later that evening, I tried the wine with Petrale sole drenched in a lemon sauce. What a difference this made with the Quivira. The lemony flavors of the sauce balanced the acidity and stronger citrus flavors in the wine. The wine became more appealing and very tasty with this meal. Quivira is a winery that practices biodynamic farming and is located in the Dry Creek Valley of Sonoma. 88 Points
Whitehall Lane Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2012
Year after year this is one of my favorite Sauvignon Blanc wines. I cannot believe that I actually chose the Beach House by a very slight margin over the Whitehall Lane. I thought they were very similar in style. The Whitehall Lane S.B. is made with 91% Sauvignon Blanc and 9% Semillon. 30% of the Sauvignon Blanc juice was fermented in new French oak barrels. This result is a very nice mouth feel and a very nice finish to the wine. The wine normally sells for $18 but we purchased it for $12.59 at the Safeway sale. I recently tasted the 2011 vintage of this wine and, if my memory bank and notes are correct, I like the 2011 vintage of this wine much more. But again, taste is so different depending on the mood, the meal and other factors. I rate this wine at 88 Points. Whitehall Lane is located in St. Helena on Highway 29.
