Mike on wine – October picks

Veteran wine enthusiast and a member of the Vintage Tasters, Mike has two brilliant selections to add to our list of recommended wines for October and the Fall months. Did you read about Mike’s blockbuster wine trade at Caymus? I was there to witness this monster wine trade that went down a few weeks ago.

Chateau Capbern Gasqueton

Chateau Capbern Gasqueton

2011 Capbern Gasqueton, St-Estèphe K&L Wines $17.99

We had this with dinner a few nights ago and it was a knock out!! The Capbern Gasqueton is a “drink now” blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot. It is a wine with complex flavors and layers of medium-bodied fruit that keeps going on as you take each sip. This is classic Bordeaux in that you continue to get a mix of textures as it continues to open. Given the current market for Cabernet based wine, this is an outstanding value. I will certainly head back to K&L Wines to purchase more. The Wine Enthusiast rates the wine 92 Points; I rate it at 89 Points.

Saint-Roch Chimeres

Saint-Roch Chimeres

2013 Château Saint-Roch “Chimères” Côtes du Roussillon-Villages K&L Wines $13.99

About 30 minutes after corking, the Château Saint-Roch opens into a rounded and balanced Rhone style wine. The wine is a blend of Grenache 40%, Carignane 30%, Syrah 20% and Mouvedre 10%. This is an  Eric Solomon Selection. Eric Solomon has become well established for his ability to import really good wines from lesser known appellations and at great value prices. The Chateau Saint-Roch is a medium bodied wine with expressive notes of fruit and soil. K&L Wines has sold more than half of their 2000 case order. In my opinion, 90 points for price and quality. You can drink this often and it will provide pleasure. Robert Parker gives is a stunning 93 Points.
