Learn about Viognier
Viognier is a grape originally grown in the Northern Rhone Valley. It has perhaps become more popular in California. Viognier is a full-bodied wine with wonderful aromatic characteristics. Viognier has become a popular substitute for Chardonnay. Viognier can be made in stainless tanks, giving it more of its natural fruit flavors, or it can be aged and fermented in oak barrels. If it undergoes malolactic fermentation, the wine becomes more full bodied. Viognier is grown widely in the Sierra Foothills and in the Paso Robles wine region.
Under $20 Viognier wines we like
- Unfortunately, there are few Viognier wines under the $20 category. Our favorite Viognier wines are from the Amador and El Dorado Counties. For just a shade over $20, one can find delicious Viognier. Our favorite is the Cedarville Viognier. If purchased by the case, the price drops below $20.
- Pine Ridge Winery in the Napa Valley produces a white wine that is a blend of Viognier and Chenin Blanc. It is always a very nice bargain wine. Review of Pine Ridge Chenin Blanc/Viognier
