Ferrari-Carano Fumé Blanc 2014 – A wonderful choice for outdoor enjoyment

Ferrari-Carano Fumé Blanc 2014 at Safeway – $10.79 at the six-pack price

The Ferrari-Carano Fumé Blanc is the flagship wine for Ferrari-Carano Vineyards & Winery in the Dry Creek Valley. It is their bread and butter wine, they make a ton, and you can find it in most supermarket wine departments. I call it “old reliable,” because it is a  good-tasting Sauvignon Blanc wine at a very good price. It essentially tastes the same year after year. The grapes come from three Sonoma AVA’s – Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, and the Russian River Valley. It is mostly fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks, but a good portion spends time in neutral French oak barrels. It is clean and refreshing, with a nice set of flavors that include some citrus and tropical notes. The barrel treatment gives added measure on the palate of richness. I think this is a terrific outdoor wine. Safeway has the best price in my area, even better than the Costco stores. You must buy six bottles at the  the 30% off sale to get the $9.72 pricing. It is quite the deal! By comparison, the Ferrari-Carano winery sells the Fumé Blanc online for $14. I score the Ferrari-Carano Fumé Blanc 2014 at 88 Points. The Ferrari-Carano Fumé Blanc matches well with seafood appetizers, cheese, and light chicken dishes.

If you plan a trip to the Dry Creek Valley, the Ferrari-Carano winery is worth a stop for tasting wine, viewing beautiful landscaped gardens, and shopping for boutique items. The winery is located on Dry Creek Road about 8 miles west of Highway 101 in Healdsburg at the Dry Creek Exit. Please read our review of the Ferrari-Carano winery. Along the way there are several fantastic wineries to visit. Our favorites can be found on the Dry Creek Road Wine Route.
