2014 Robert Mondavi Napa Valley Cabernet – great Cab for your wine cellar

2014 Robert Mondavi Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

We were fortunate to have three successive outstanding vintages in the Napa Valley and California beginning with 2012. By and large, the vintners agree that 2014 is the best, especially in the Napa Valley. Now is time for bargain wine hunters to take advantage of the 2014 vintage and purchase the best. Then lay them down for a few years. In the case of the 2014 Robert Mondavi Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, it is a fantastic wine. Yes, it is ready to drink now, but it will love some time to rest and even get better. How to turn a $20 Cabernet into a $50 bottle of Cabernet: Buy a good Napa Valley Cabernet and put it in the cellar for five years. This one qualifies.

The 2014 Robert Mondavi Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is composed of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot, 1% Cab Franc, 0.5% Malbec, and 0.5% Syrah. The grapes for this wine came from two vineyards in the Napa Valley. The first is the To Kalon vineyard in Oakville. The To Kalon Vineyard is perhaps the best Cabernet Sauvignon Vineyard in the Napa Valley. The second vineyard is Mondavi’s Wappo Hill Vineyard in the Stags Leap AVA.

188,000 cases were made of this wine, so it should be in many markets shortly. I often find vintages of the Robert Mondavi Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon in Costco, Safeway, and Nob Hill. The RSP is $28. I have never paid more than $19.99 for this wine. Keep your eye open for when this latest release from Robert Mondavi makes it to the wine shelves. The year 2016 marks the 50th anniversary of the Robert Mondavi Winery.

About Robert Mondavi 50th Anniversary

* When I received my sample of the 2014 Robert Mondavi Napa Valley Cabernet, along with the spec sheet came this recipe to pair with the wine. I indeed cooked this meal and opened the Cab. What a delightful meal. I wish I could find a link to this recipe. I will ask the winery if I can post the recipe on GoodCheapVino.com.
